Children rights still arouse concern

In 2009 UNICEF marked the 20^th anniversary of the adoption of Convention on the Rights of the Child by the UN General Assembly. However, children still suffer from poverty and abuse all over the globe.

UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman calls the convention “the most ratified human rights treaty in human history”. Only U.S. and Somalia have not ratified it, Chicago Tribune reports.

According to Veneman, the convention “transformed the way children are viewed and treated throughout the world.”

On the eve of the 20^th anniversary UNICEF issued the State of the World's Children report. Despite considerable progress that was made within the past twenty years, “many of the world’s children will never see the inside of a school room,” the UNICEF website reads. Millions lack protection against violence, abuse, exploitation, discrimination and neglect.
