NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, has ordered the development of an operation called Arctic Sentry, Der Spiegel reports.

NATO's command has confirmed that it is a preparation for the alliance's Enhanced Vigilance Activity.

According to preliminary plans, the mission will include regular maneuvers by NATO ships, enhanced airspace surveillance by fighter jets, and the temporary deployment of a small ground force for exercises in Greenland, reports DW.

A NATO command representative stressed that details have not yet been disclosed, but the goal is clearly stated: to demonstrate the ability to respond quickly to challenges in a strategically important region.
