European Union countries and the European Parliament have decided to ban the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines after 2035, reports Reuters.

The ban on this type of car is part of a plan to create a neutral economy in Europe by 2050. The decision should accelerate the transition of European countries to electric cars, which will help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

French MEP Pascal Canfin called the decision historic. According to the politician, the car sector currently accounts for 16 percent of emissions in Europe, but by 2050 it will be possible to make the sphere carbon-neutral.

At the same time, Greenpeace representatives did not appreciate the decision of the European authorities. "Europe is embracing the shift to zero-emission mobility,"  the organization said in a conversation with the Belgian publication The Brussels Times. According to experts, new fossil-fuel cars should be banned by 2028 at the latest.
