At the “Radisson SAS Iveria” hotel opening ceremony, September 3, 2009, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili called to annihilate Aprasidze criminal clan that actually controls Svaneti, mountainous province in Georgia, adding that gave a personal command to do so.

“Special operations in Svaneti will be carried on, as we wish to get rid of criminals in the region and develop international tourism there” Saakashvili said.

Georgian President has been waging a war against Aprasidze clan for several years. In March, 2004 on Saakashvili’s order a special mission was executed in Svaneti. As a result, according to official data, two Aprasidze family members were killed (including a thane), and two sons – arrested.

Saakashvili asserts Aprasidze formed a private army that terrorizes the region.
