Armenian News-NEWS.am has learned that Hayk Sargsyan, the nephew of Armenia’s third President Serzh Sargsyan, was just recently released from a penitentiary in capital city Yerevan.

Speaking with us, Yerem Sargsyan, the attorney of Hayk Sargsyan, confirmed this information.

He added that Hayk Sargsyan’s relatives had posted the respective 50mn-dram (approx. US$307,840) bail, which the court had set earlier in the day.

The Yerevan court of general jurisdiction on Monday upheld the first-instance court’s decision on remanding Hayk Sargsyan in custody. But, at the same time, the general jurisdiction court granted the motion by Hayk Sargsyan’s legal defender, and ruled that Hayk Sargsyan can be released from detention if a 50mn-dram bail is posted.

Hayk Sargsyan is charged with crimes that were committed eleven years ago: attempted murder, and illegal possession of arms and ammunition. But he pleads innocent.

The first court hearing on this case is set for September 17.
