Starvation is “almost everywhere” in war-stricken Sudan, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the BBC's Today program after visiting the country.

“The situation in Sudan is very worrying ... massive population displacement - now the largest in the world - and of course famine,” the WHO director general said.

He noted that 12 million people have already been displaced, adding that the world's attention to Sudan is “very low” and race is a factor.

“Imagine: destruction, displacement, widespread disease, and now also famine,” Dr. Tedros told the BBC. He said he recently visited an internally displaced persons camp and hospital in Sudan.

Some 25 million people - half of Sudan's population - need support, the WHO director general added. 

Thousands of people have been killed since the civil war between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Reaction Force (RSF) began in April 2023.
