YEREVAN. – The letter that was sent to the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights, and with respect to Karen Petrosyan who was killed while in Azerbaijani captivity, has been accepted for consideration.

Armenia Human Rights Defender’s advisor Yeranuhi Tumanyants told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Armenia’s ombudsman had petitioned to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and concerning the immediate release of Petrosyan’s dead body from Azerbaijan.

“It turns out that a person can die while remaining in captivity for one day, and the surrendering of the body [may be] delayed for more than one month.

“This is problematic, since a speedy return of the corpse can be the best way and chance to conceal the evidence of torture, whereas such a delay may give rise to suspicion that there actually has been torture and violence, [and] which is why the person died in one day,” Tumanyants added.

Karen Petrosyan, a 32-year-old resident of Chinari village of Armenia’s Tavush Region, was captured by the Azerbaijanis on August 7, and on the next day, Azerbaijan informed that the young Armenian man had “suddenly” died of an “acute heart failure.”
