The Turkish referendum is of paramount importance for the establishment of democracy in the country, Ara Gochuchyan, Editor of the Turkey-based Zhamanak (Times) Armenian-language newspaper, told NEWS.am. He believes the nation-wide referendum should only be welcomed.

“77% of Turkish citizens enjoying the right of voting participated in the referendum – the best index in history,” he said. Gochunyan pointed out the referendum was transparent and peaceful.

“In come regions some small groupings tried to call for boycott, but law-enforcers prevented their attempts,” he said.

Immediately after the preliminary results were announced, Turkish Premier Recep Erdogan made a speech. U.S. President Barack Obama called and congratulated him. The Opposition accepted the referendum results. “It was an idyll,” Gochunyan said.

At the September 12 referendum in Turkey, 58% of the voters supported constitutional reforms proposed by Recep Erdogan’s party.
