YEREVAN. – Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan attended official opening of the annual symposium of the Armenian Economic Association.

In his welcoming remarks, Sargsyan underscored the importance of this event which brings together specialists from numerous countries, the Government press service informs.

The PM stated that the Government of Armenia submitted to the public and the National Assembly the precepts for a new economic policy. “We adopted a principle that the state bears a responsibility for creating a favorable competitive [economic] environment and is obligated to conduct a clear industrial policy. We presented a new concept to the public. With this method, we specified eleven branches [of economy] as priority and we are designing development programs for these branches,” Sargsyan noted.        

Also, Armenia’s Premier spoke about the challenges facing the country’s economy. “It is more important for our citizens to sense the economic growth on their standards of living. [But] We need to be able to surmount poverty in Armenia. [And] The balance of payments, the balance of trade still have a large gap,” he said.    

In this context, Tigran Sargsyan highlighted the global economic situation. “Armenia has always conducted an open economic policy over the course of these twenty years, and this means we need to be vigilant from the viewpoint of international influences,” the Premier said.  

To note, economists from Armenia and the Diaspora are attending the aforesaid three-day symposium.
