YEREVAN. – Even though Armenia’s presidential candidate, non-party affiliate, epic poetry specialist Vardan Sedrakyan had said he will start campaigning on Friday, something unexpected has occurred. Sedrakyan himself stated this, during a press conference on Saturday, referring to the assassination attempt that was staged Thursday night against fellow presidential candidate, opposition National Self-Determination Union Chairman Paruyr Hayrikyan, who is currently recovering at hospital from a gunshot wound.

In Sedrakyan’s words, it would be unethical for him to speak about an active election campaign at this time.

“Now, we are obligated to sit, [and] wait for the Constitutional Court’s decision [on whether or not postponing the presidential election slated for February 18],” Sedrakyan said.

He added that he will not make use of the paid campaign airtime, since he is tightfisted and does not wish to throw good money after bad.
