The Swedish government has reinstated mandatory conscription. This was announced by the spokeswoman of Sweden's defense ministry Marinette Nyh Radeb, reports Russian service of BBC.

"One of the reasons is the activity of the Russian military," she explained. About 4 thousand men and women will be conscripted from January 1 of 2018. The Ministry will select conscripts from 13 thousand people born in 1999 who will undergo medical examinations.

The recruits will serve for 9-12 months. The compulsory conscription in Sweden was in effect until 2010. At that time, only men were conscripted.

The spokesman for the Defense Ministry also told, that 70 per cent of the MPs supported the government to increase armed forces and establish close military cooperation with the neighboring countries.
