Former president of Haiti, Rene Preval died at the age of 74, Reuters reported.

Preval became the first leader in the 202-year history of the country to win a democratic election, serve a full term and peacefully hand power to a successor.

He was an agronomist. For the first time Preval  won the presidency in 1996 , after a bout of instability that saw his ally, former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, toppled in a coup, then brought back to power with the help of U.S. troops.

From 2006 to 2011, Preval again served as president of the country. His legacy will always be tied to the 2010 earthquake killing more than 200,000 people.

During his presidency, Preval paid attention to development of infrastructure, was engaged in a land reform. Unlike many predecessors, he wasn't accused of human rights’ mass violations, despotism or corruption.
