October 7 typhoon Melor may be the most powerful storm in recent years to hit Japan. The heavy storm caused torrential rains and strong winds in the islands Tanegashima and Yakusima. Nearly 14.000 families lost power and people in some villages of Kyushu and Okinawa Islands were evacuated, Vesti reports.

More than 87 flights were cancelled because of heavy winds, however their number is likely to rise due to storm approaching. According to the local meteorologists, the powerful typhoon may bring 9 meter waves in the Pacific coast.

Under the forecast, the storm will strike the country’s main territory on October 8. In a number of regions 500 mm rains is forecasted.

Presently, typhoon Melor is raging in Kagoshima prefecture with the speed of 144 km/h, ITAR-TASS informs.
