US President Donald Trump is going to take a new approach to solving the problem of homelessness, forcibly relocating those living on the streets to large camps and obliging them to undergo treatment for mental disorders and addictions, CBS News reports.

According to it, the Trump administration is looking to move away from the Housing First program, which prioritizes providing permanent housing for people who find themselves homeless. It was introduced nationally in 2004 under the George W. Bush - Jr. administration and expanded under Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Now Trump, the network notes, is seeking to eliminate taxpayer-subsidized housing initiatives and is pushing for a punitive approach with fines and potential jail time for the homeless. He assumes that mental health and addiction treatment should be the primary responses to homelessness.

In early March, Trump instructed U.S. Mayor Muriel Bowser (representing the Democratic Party) to remove homeless encampments from the city.
