Toyota and General Motors are recalling about 61,000 2003-2004 Corolla and Matrix models, as well as 2004-2005 RAV4s and 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe models because of airbag problems, VOA reported. Most of the recalled vehicles are in the United States.

These vehicles were equipped with airbags that utilize ammonium nitrate. However, because of exposure to time, extreme temperatures and humidity, the airbag can lose reliability.

Since May 2009, at least 26 people have died in the U.S. because of the random deployment of such airbags, and 30 people have died worldwide. About 400 have been injured and traumatized.
