YEREVAN. – Armenia’s former Police Criminal Investigation Department Chief, Police Major General Hovhannes Tamamyan, who was sentenced to four years in prison on charges of misusing official power, could be released soon, Haykakan Zhamanak daily writes. 

“It is assumed that he will be released by way of being granted pardon by [President] Serzh Sargsyan.

To our correspondent’s query regarding this prospect, Tamamyan’s attorney Vaghinak Gevorgyan responded that he is not authorized to answer questions referring to the petition for a pardon.    

[Yet] According to our information, Tamamyan’s petition for a pardon is at the Presidential Palace for already more than a week and Serzh Sargsyan is expected to sign the respective decree soon, and he [Tamamyan] will be released.

But the public will not be informed of this, since the decrees on [granting] pardon are not publicized,” Haykakan Zhamanak writes.
