YEREVAN. – Following the adoption of Armenia’s Declaration of Independence, the objectives, which were noted in the Declaration, became a reality slowly and at a tortoise’s pace, but to some extent, nonetheless, National Self-Determination Union Chairman Paruyr Hayrikyan stated, during a press conference on Thursday, in connection with the 22nd anniversary of Armenia’s Declaration of Independence.

In his words, the provisions included in the Declaration materialized to the extent the people were prepared, and to the extent the authorities—who carry out the will of the people—were ready.  

“What did the March 26, 1921 Treaty of Moscow mean? Russia and Turkey were signing a treaty with one another concerning Armenia, which was inadmissible by the international agreement. And it was in this sense that Armenia had lost its independence.

We all know that no step was taken in this direction, either in the 1990s, or later. From this viewpoint, one of the key requirements of our Declaration of Independence did not become a reality,” Paruyr Hayrikyan remarked.      

This notwithstanding, he noted that, in terms of Armenian national and political life, the Declaration was a huge phenomenon which finally lifted the barrier between the healthy- and morbid-thinking people.
