“We strongly object NATO or any other peacekeeping mission presence in NKR if the issue is settled incompletely, that is the resumption or outbreak of the conflict is ruled out,” Heritage opposition party member Styopa Safaryan told journalists today.

“According to Madrid principles on NKR conflict settlement, Armenian Government agreed with incomplete solution to the problem, settling certain aspects at step-by-step approach. In such situations if the problem is unclear, there is no option but to agree with the presence of some peacekeeping forces: NATO or CSTO. These forces or any other have to control Armenia-NKR corridor to escort Azerbaijani refugees to return to their former places of residence until the final decision on NKR status made.”

According to Safaryan it is the result of Armenian authorities’ talks within last decade and under incomplete decision the peacekeeping troops’ presence is dangerous. “If the issue is discussed in a different format, other solutions would be sought and Karabakh was not pushed out of the negotiations by Yerevan, we would have other principles now and the peacekeeping contingent’s presence would be of no necessity,” Safaryan said, adding there is no region in the world where population is content with the presence of peacekeeping troops.
