Smolninski district court of Saint Petersburg on Friday ruled on the arrest of the city’s former Deputy Governor Marat Hovhannisyan, who is accused of fraud during the construction of Zenit Arena stadium, RIA Novosti reports from the courtroom.

According to the Investigative Committee of Russia, Hovhannisyan was detained in Moscow on the sidelines of the case on the misappropriation of over 50 million rubles in 2014 when signing an agreement between prime contractor Transstroy and TDM corporation on the delivery of a video screen for Zenit Arena.

Hovhannisyan may face a sentence of up to ten years in prison.

“The court concludes that it is impossible to enforce other precautionary measure not related to imprisonment regarding Hovhannisyan,” judge Olesya Bulanaya said.

The court upheld the investigator’s motion to hold a hearing in camera to avoid disclosure of investigation secrets. At 5:30 pm - three hours after the beginning of the hearing - doctors entered the courtroom. Soon they left it without the defendant.

Zenit Arena is one of the most expensive sport complexes in the world.
