YEREVAN. – The International Committee of the Red Cross commented on the article by Haqqin.az published on 8 February and titled “Hundreds of Armenian Soldiers Killed”.
“We would like to state that the person introduced as Sofia Khachatrian does not and never worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross nor she ever was a volunteer of the Armenian Red Cross Society. Reference made by that person in social media is false and has nothing to do with the ICRC and its activities,” representative of the ICRC Yerevan office Zara Amatuni said in a statement in response to Armenian News-NEWS.am inquiry.
“We would like to remind that spreading false information or misusing the name of the ICRC for any reason can put in jeopardy the ICRC's unique role of a neutral intermediary for humanitarian purposes in this conflict.
The ICRC has been carrying out humanitarian work in the region in connection with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict since 1992. When the conflict escalated in April, we offered to provide humanitarian services and act as a neutral intermediary. We assisted the sides in several operations to search for the bodies of those killed in action and retrieve them from the battlefield, along the Line of Contact. We also facilitated the handover of the bodies. It is up to the concerned sides to share relevant statistics.”
