So the problem of Nagorno-Karabakh status may not be resolved during the coming 100 years and may even remain unsolved forever. This was actually what President Ilham Aliyev said in his interview with Vesti Nedeli (News of the Week) TV program on the Russian RTR TV channel.

It is only a first reaction that the statement might seem unacceptable to the Armenian side. However, considered in detail it becomes as much unacceptable to Baku.

Indeed, if one’s point of view is that Nagorno-Karabakh will never be officially recognized by the international community as an independent state of Azerbaijan, it is a rather bitter reality. On the other hand, if one follows President Aliyev’s logic, Nagorno-Karabakh will never become an official autonomy as part of Azerbaijan, which is a bright outlook described by the Azerbaijani leader.

The only question that remains is: do the Nagorno-Karabakh people need an official status of independence? Of course, they need it. It is highly important for them to revive their spirits, and accomplish the purpose of their heroic struggle.

And what about the practical point of view? Well, does an Armenian marz (region), financed from the Armenian budget and defended by the Armenian army, need international recognition?! It does not neeed it at all, dear Mr. Aliyev.

So official Baku may not agree with the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh. We ourselves do not agree to it, just as we do not agree with the independence of the Kotayk or Vayots Dzor regions of Armenia.
