Afghan President Ashraf Ghani signed a peace treaty with armed group led by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar Hezb-i-Islami on Thursday, RIA Novosti reported.

Last week, representatives of the Afghan government, including National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar аnd the head of the delegation of party signed the peace agreement.

According to AP, the ceremony of signing was held in the presidential palace in Kabul.  Hekmatyar personally wasn't present and signed the agreement via video conference. The event was broadcast on local television.

Islamic party of Afghanistan is a political party founded in 1976 by Hekmatyar representing the interests of Pushtuns. It has legal representation in Afghanistan's parliament and has paramilitary groups, which include about one thousand people.

In 2012-2013, party militants took responsibility for the attacks. The U.S. considers party extremist for its violent anti-American ideology and support for Sharia law.
