YEREVAN. – Armenia only once held fair parliamentary elections, which took place in 1990, deputy chairman of oppositional Heritage party said at the hearings initiated by Armenian center for political and international studies and NDI.
According to Hakobyan, not all elective models can be effective if there is no political will. Yet, he believes that Armenia needs a proportional system. Majoritarian electoral areas are the places where the violations are taking place.
“We should comprehend that we have to hold fair elections, accounting peoples’ voice. Otherwise, we will bring a new disaster for our people,” Hakobyan said.
ARF Dashnaktsutyun MP Armen Rustamyan said that European colleagues are often surprised at why they pay importance to the proportional system. Armenia has no democracy. That is why the belief for the elections does not exist. Elections are a part of reproduction, Rustamyan stated.
Besides, the MPs elected by majoritarian system either are representatives of authority or cooperate with authorities after being elected. This is the best way for the reproduction of the authorities, ARF MP noted.
