YEREVAN. – The news, which Armenia’s press is circulating these days about Syunik Regional Governor Suren Khachatryan’s violence against businesswoman Silva Hambardzumyan, has caused great concern for the “Against Violence Toward Women” Coalition.
The Coalition released a statement to that effect, which specifically reads as follows:
“Any incident of violence is objectionable. That is way the Coalition calls upon the society to be vigilant and demand that any such incident be exposed, and to be persistent in its impartial investigation.
Violence by a senior official is particularly objectionable because he is a social figure, and he must serve an example for other citizens.”
As Armenian News-NEWS.am informed earlier, Armenia’s Special Investigation Service had launched two criminal cases against Suren Kahachatryan, based on Silva Hambardzumyan’s written statement. One case is launched for Syunik Regional Governor’s stealing of the businesswoman’s property, and the other is launched for beating her in capital Yerevan’s Armenia Marriott Hotel, on November 14.
