YEREVAN. – Armenian Police Chief Vladimir Gasparyan believes police is on the right direction regarding the neutralization of the gang on September 23, he gave an interview to the Armenian News-NEWS.am correspondent.
Mr. Gasparyan did you manage to get acquainted with the gang case neutralized on September 23 since your appointment? They have been neutralized for already four months. However, robbery attacks are still continuing at the houses of the officials. Do you think it possible that the investigation may run on a wrong direction, and that the arrested are not the right persons to have carried out the robberies?
First of all the robbery attacks are not continuing. This is for certain. Regarding the case, it is still in the pre-investigation period. It is not proper to give any clarifications on the case. I do not believe I should give a priority to one or the other case. The practice shows that our strategy is right. We have registered successes on crime disclosure before, however, it is still far away from being satisfactory, at least for me.
Rumors are circulating that ex-Police Chief Alik Sargsyan presented the scenario of neutralizing the gang to prove effectiveness of his work. Whereas the real criminals are still in freedom. Is it true?
Sources available to you and me are various. I believe the question is not directed to me.
Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier that the gang is accused in having robbed the houses of former MP Napoleon Azizyan and Malatsia-Sebastia district former head Aghvan Grigoryan.
Police neutralized the gang on September 23. Some of the accused tried to escape. However, the Mercedes vehicle crashed and Gurgen Hayrapetyan, 49, fell from the cliff and died during the escape.
As a result, 16 people were detained. 8 of them, including one of the heads of the gang Artush Hakobyan, were later arrested. At first rumors told that sons of some officials are within the gang. However, police and prosecutor later rejected the rumors.
