Dual standards are unacceptable when it comes to assessing the events that took place in Karabakh and in Crimea. This is what former vice-president of the National Assembly, Spokesperson of the Republican Party of Armenia Eduard Sharmazanov declard during the international scientific-practical conference entitled “The Right of Nations to Self-Determination in Modern International Practice: Opportunities and Challenges” on 29 March.

According to him, the difficulties with the political processes linked to Karabakh and Crimea are the result of the policies of the Soviet authorities. “The decisions of 1921 and 1954 contradicted the right of nations to self-determination, which means that nations independently determine their fate, and this is enshrined in the UN Charter,” the RPA member said.

Sharmazanov pinpointed the similarity between Karabakh and Crimea from the perspective of the heroic history and the struggle for rights.

Eduard Sharmazanov recalled that the result of the struggle of the people of Karabakh was the peaceful conduct of a referendum and the declaration of the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

On 29 March, Yerevan is hosting events dedicated to the 5th anniversary of the reunification of Crimea with Russia.
