March 24, French sex workers marched in the streets in Paris demanding official recognition of their status. The demonstrators protested against the Parliamentarians’ proposal to reopen brothels in France, move prostitutes off the streets and provide them with medical, financial and legal protection. Protesters were carrying banners “You sleep with us, you vote against us,” breakingnews.ie website reports.

“We are workers and we wish choice to work as we want,” a 27 year-old Parisian sex worker said.

“There is nothing to be ashamed of. They used to say that this is the oldest job ever, and that’s not for no reason,” 19-year-old hooker maintained.

Bordellos were legally banned in France in 1946. The law adopted in 2003 toughened restrictions against prostitution by imposing punishment for solicitation with 2-months imprisonment and €3,750 fine.
