At the moment, intensification of efforts aimed at peaceful settlement of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan is of central importance for Germany, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated during a joint news conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Scholz noted that Germany is worried about the unstable situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

"Such a situation cannot remain like this for long. There is a risk of further escalation. This is evidenced by the events of the previous months and weeks. Naturally, we do not forget about the humanitarian situation on the ground, too. Our common goal should be to find a long-term and feasible solution—for the benefit of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh—to this conflict," he said and added that the peaceful settlement of the conflict should be based on preserving the territorial integrity of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Also, Scholz highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of the population of Karabakh, the preservation of human and minority rights of all residents of the two states—and in accordance with international norms and obligations.

"Therefore, Germany supports the mediation efforts of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. The [current] European peacekeeping mission [in Armenia] is a part of it. I welcome that President Aliyev had a meeting with his Armenian colleagues. There is a united will to resolve the conflict peacefully," the German Chancellor said.
